When sciatica takes over your day
Sciatica rarely stays in one place. It can start as an ache in your lower back or buttock, then travel down the back of your thigh and sometimes as far as your foot. Sitting through a meeting becomes a negotiation. Getting out of the car takes a moment longer than it used to. Nights can be restless, because every position seems to find the sore spot.
Many people spend weeks waiting for it to settle, trying stretches from the internet, or changing how they sit and stand to keep the leg quiet. Some find it eases for a day or two and then returns. That pattern is common, and it usually points to a source that still needs finding.
You deserve a clear answer about what is irritating the nerve. Once that is known, treatment can be aimed at the right place.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica describes pain that follows the sciatic nerve, often as a result of irritation, compression, or pinching of the nerve or the nerve root. Sciatica pain can run from your lower back through the buttock and down the back of the leg and it usually affects one side. People describe it with sharp or burning pain, pins and needles, numbness, or a heavy, weak feeling in the leg.
The nerve is often irritated where it leaves the spine, by a disc, a stiff joint, or the muscles around the hip and buttock. If treated early and with the right plan, most cases can improve within a few weeks. The first step is getting an examination to determine the root cause of your sciatica pain. If left untreated, symptoms can linger, return, or affect your sleep and work.
How we treat sciatica at BackActive Chiropractic
Lone Kristensen, BSc(Chiro), DC, MCC, and Charlotte Moran, MChiro(Hons), both trained at the Anglo European College of Chiropractic and treat patients at our Infirmary Road clinic in Sheffield. Together they bring more than 30 years of experience in spinal manipulation, soft tissue treatment and rehabilitation.
Your chiropractic treatment plan is built around what the examination finds:
- Spinal manipulation and mobilisation to improve how the joints of your lower back and pelvis move
- Soft tissue treatment for the buttock, hip and leg muscles that often tighten around an irritated nerve
- Rehabilitation exercises and movement advice that keep the improvement going between visits
When a scan or specialist opinion would help, we can arrange X-ray or MRI and refer you to local GPs, orthopaedic consultants and neurosurgeons.

What relief from sciatica can look like
Patients tell us the changes show up in everyday moments first. Every case differs, and we give you a realistic outlook after your assessment.
- Sitting comfortably again. Drives, desk work and evenings on the sofa without constantly shifting position.
- Walking further. Stairs, shopping trips and dog walks at your own pace instead of the leg's.
- Planning ahead with confidence. Booking the holiday or the weekend away without wondering how the leg will behave.
Back pain often travels with sciatica, and our back pain treatment page covers the wider picture.
Chiropractic
Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the joints, muscles and soft tissues, particularly those of the spine and their effect on the nervous system.
The chiropractor is a specialist clinician. Five years of training mean highly developed diagnostic skills, and as a professional consultant he/she can determine whether manipulation is appropriate for the condition, or whether the patient should be referred for other types of treatment or further investigation.

The things patients ask us most before booking.
In many cases, yes. Chiropractic treatment for sciatica combines spinal manipulation, soft tissue work and rehabilitation exercises, guided by what your examination finds. If the examination points to a cause that needs a different kind of care, we tell you and refer you on.
Many people notice improvement within a few weeks, though recovery varies with the cause and how long symptoms have been present. After your assessment we give you a realistic timeline for your situation and reassess as you progress.
Most people start with an examination, which often gives enough information to begin treatment. When your symptoms suggest a scan would add something useful, we arrange X-ray or MRI and share the results with you.
Back pain is felt in the spine and the muscles around it. Sciatica adds nerve symptoms that travel into the buttock or leg, such as pain, tingling or weakness. The two often appear together, and our back pain treatment page covers the wider picture.
Patients pay at the appointment, and many claim the cost back through a health cash plan such as Westfield Health. It is worth checking the terms of your own policy.
